BATUK – “Daniel”

Watch Batuk’s debut music video “Daniel”

We made noise about Batuk’s chugging tribal debut single, “Daniel”, late last year with great anticipation for Spoek Mathambo’s latest musical collective. The group recently followed up the audio release with an accompanying visual treatment to fully complete the introduction of Batuk.

The video was shot in Mozambique (where the group recorded the album) and was directed by Cape Town photographer Kent Andreasen with artistic direction from BATUK. The video reflects the African roots of their music as the group – clad in hybrid traditional attire – herd cows, sing and dance in the foreground of an arid landscape. In parallel to Batuk’s modern interpretation of African rhythm and sound, the African visual aesthetic in the video is periodically filtered through an Ultraviolet light – contrasting the past and the future.
