Win tickets to Halloween at the Voortrekker Monument

Expect an all-round genre spectacle of music and dress-up

It’s that time of the year where the only thing that comes to mind is that quote from the movie Mean Girls: “In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In girl world, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girl can say anything else about it.”

There is something about the Voortrekker Monument that makes me feel like I’m at home, I think it is all the Park Acoustics I’ve attended there before or maybe even the rich history it carries, either way I am really happy that another city slicking venue is not hosting this year.

This year’s event will definitely not be a sardine fest: it is bigger, better and with names like Evil Empire, Blood Club and Space Boogie it can only mean one thing, Halloween is upon us. It is time to dust off those old party outfits and dress-up. With 25 Acts and three stages, Arcade Empire and Griet aim to bring you yet another epic Halloween party.

If you want to move in strange ways and possibly shed a tear in the process, I urge you to go and see Thor Rixon play at the Blood Club Stage. Those moves he busts in his music video “fuk bread” are bound to get you to go fuck yes. Let’s get weird and loose!

HAEZER is one of the top exports of our electronic scene. He is a bass-heavy-electronic-dance-music-god and with a recent Europe tour in his pocket, where he played 34 shows, sharing stages with the likes of FM Belfast and Chase n Status, he’s definitely an act you do not want to miss. Readying to swarm bees to a honey jar is king of the underground drum and bass jungle scene: Niskerone, who took his energetic live sets to the crowds of Europe back in 2010 where he performed in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Sweden, as well as Spain’s Monegros Desert Festival. In 2011, he went back for another epic performance alongside David Guetta, Rusko, and Dirtyphonics. So for all those hard hitting energy loving groups, Niskerone and HAEZER are gonna turn up the notch and will make you want more.

The three piece think-dance-machine, Bittereinder is the real deal. I think they are one of the best Afrikaans electro rap-sets in South Africa I have seen to date. They have played headline festivals all around South Africa, as well as The Netherlands, Mozambique and Nambia, including Oppikoppi, Lowlands and KKNK. Imagine a whole crowd signing along to their song:

B, I to the double T, E-R

to the E, I, N, D, E-R

now that you know just who we are

get your hands up, lekker deurmekaar

So let’s go get lekker dermekaar in the crowd.

High energy performances, trumpets and a ska-punk blend taking the stage; Fuzigish is one of those live acts that you need to see before you die. Roaring stages and skank pits since 1997, the local punks will have the venue packed and an energy so erratic and crazy, everyone will join in, just cause. Half way through their set, I’m sure you’ll l start feeling the heat of the crowd and the mosh-pit will take you back to the days you were a kid, sneaking out to Cool Runnings for not just a good time – the best time.

Five-piece instrumental band Nomadic Orchestra brings a strong jazz aesthetic to the stage their  improvisation has never been so strong. Their music is original and composed by each member of the band, and their set will have you moving and grooving with an infectious brand of dance music that will have you clicking your fingers and tapping your feet in no time.

After the last band ends on the stage, make your way to go and see the Bobbejaan DJ’s. Although they just spin a vinyl or play from a playlist, somehow playing Blondie at the end of any event gets to me.

With such a diverse set of genres all grouped together, this year’s Halloween is set to cater for all the music lovers out there, whether you are there for the electronics, drum and bass or punk, this is definitely a date with the night. The monument will probably be filled with some scary characters and weird Suicide Squad wannabes; expect beer and Tequila, it will be one for the books, so let’s get freaky. It’s gonna be sexy. See you there!
