The blues kicks in with the latest song from Go The Rodeo
When you think of the blues, you think about misfortune, betrayal and regret. You lose your job, you get the blues. You fall out of love, you get the blues. While blues lyrics often deal with personal adversity, the music itself goes far beyond self-pity. From unbridled joy to deep sadness, no form of music communicates more genuine emotion.
It has been more than a year since the last time we’ve heard from the talented fellows over at Go The Rodeo, but a state of melancholy kicks in as I listen to their latest song. ‘Ghost’ is about leaving the country and meeting someone that seems to be quite perfect, but at the same time something inside you wants out. It is kind of contradicting how something that seems so perfect can also feel so wrong. The essence of this song is captured through the music, saying what the band feels and getting rid of frustration; capturing a starkly emotional feeling within my music soul.
The guitar loops followed by the drum beat reminds me of an early Jimi Hendrix, based on amplified and electrified instruments. Corne van Niekerk’s voice is pure and melodic; characterized by a strong bassline and driving rhythms.
A little darkness comes through in the single, with the deep and dark strong beat with unusual savage tone in the backing vocals, with what seems to be screaming, towards the end of the song.
I am not sure what is in store for the band, but all I can say is MORE Go The Rodeo!
