We saw in 2015 at what is quickly becoming our favourite music festival, Smoking Dragon Festival. One of the factors which contributes to the making Smoking Dragon such a satisfying experience is the lot of people who attend. We spoke to some of these individuals to find out about more about their personal experiences of Smoking Dragon.

“This was my second.”
Why do you go to Smoking Dragon Festival?
“To not think. It’s a new festival, with zero pressure and zero churn.”
What was your favourite act or band at Smoking Dragon?
“Black Math just get better and better. Cortina are vibing hard at the moment, much tighter than they were last time I saw them. But Brother Moves On man, jesus. That performance was just fucking epic. All three of these bands should be on bigger stages.”
What was your favourite moment at Smoking Dragon?
“Who can say? I went there to erase memory.”
What is the best SA music festival? Why?
“For consistency: Oppi. For chaos: Ramfest CT. For freedom: Smoking Dragon.”

“Two”
Why do you go to Smoking Dragon Festival?
“Mostly for the jol and a handful of great acts. It’s still a new and small festival but it attracts a rad crowd from around the country, especially because it’s halfway between Jozi and Durban. There’s one stage and not every act is for me so there’s a lot of time to get loose with people I don’t see often enough.”
What was your favourite act / band at Smoking Dragon?
“The Brother Moves On, been writing my review on the festival and still can’t get past trying to describe what I experienced watching that band. I honestly got a chubby but that might have been from grinding with girl. Probably a combination of both.”
What was your favourite moment at Smoking Dragon?
“Watching my one friend piss to the left whilst another chundered to the right like a dual fountain.”
What is the best SA music festival? Why?
“The one I plan on organising. It’s working title is ‘Hipster Fuckfest’ (Courtesy of Martin Barios from Meth Breath) and it’s going to have the best line-up for non-basic bitches, Other than that, Oppikoppi earned a special place in my heart last year. Great set up, well run and a diverse line-up for all tastes.”

“I work for Pins and Knuckles merchandise as a sales & design manager and also own a clothing line on the side called Free Will Clothing. I also freelance design on everyday issues.”
How many Smoking Dragons have you been to?
“2014 was my first one!”
Why do you go to Smoking Dragon Festival?
“To be honest I went because I didn’t want to stay at home. I got a ticket from a rad bunch of people so couldn’t miss the opportunity.”
What was your favourite act / band at Smoking Dragon?
“Probably the bar, because thats where I had the most fun. But to name one I would say, Desmond & The Tutus, they were really my favourite act of the festival.”
What was your favourite moment at Smoking Dragon?
“Favourite moment probably was when it got dark at night, had the best moments with people at night just losing yourself to the music and the great vibes that people bring along to the event. I don’t wanna lie, getting with this girl was also a favourite moment.”
What is the best SA music festival? Why?
“Best music festival I would say Oppikoppi, not everyone agrees probably because of there history but in the end the crowd of people and energy you get there you wont be able to find anywhere else.”

“There are so many great festivals locally that i can’t pick one in specific. But, Smoking Dragon is one of the top I must say.”

“There really wasn’t one. The entire festival was quite rad.”
What is the best SA music festival? Why?
“This is a very subjective answer and I will say Ramfest mainly because they have been consistently rad. Even with not having a fest this year, it’s still on top of the list.”
