Layers of Africa for Africa

The last we heard from the electronic moniker of Shane Cooper, was his As We Surface EP which we reviewed. While he’s been mum on Card On Spokes releases since then, the multi-faceted musician has kept busy focusing his time and effort on the launch of his new jazz quintet called MABUTA with Bokani Dyer, Marlon Witbooi, Sisonke Xonti and Robin Fassie-Kock.

Cooper has mentioned he is also working on a new Card On Spokes EP. While it is not clear when Cooper plans to release the EP, but at least we got new Card On Spokes single yesterday. On ‘Layers’, we hear him playing the guitar, bass and synths with all the programming also composed by him in typical Card On Spokes fashion. The track also samples African music from the 1950s collected and archived by Hugh Tracey, with kin permission from the International Library of African Music.

‘Layers’ is a track off the Beating Heart – South Africa Volume 2 EP which also features a track by Subjective which is the new project of revered producer and DJ, Goldie, alongside Ulterior Motive. The EP was put together by Beating Heart which is a collective of artists and enthusiasts which spawned from a vision to bring the largest archive of African field recordings into the modern era. As with all Beating Heart releases, all proceeds generated will be donated to the communities that created the original music. In this case all profits from Beating Heart – South Africa Volume 2 will be going towards the Women’s Legal Centre and the Access Music Project.

The track is available for streaming below and you can purchase the EP via Bandcamp here.
