Malice in Tolderia
South Africa may have experienced some bad droughts recently, but it seems 2016 will yield the best harvest of mielies in five years.
With so many music festivals hatching all over South Africa, I thought that Mieliepop was one of those new festivals. But the festival is hosting its fifth edition and it promises to be better than any previous editions – which would make 2016 the best time to go to your first Mieliepop.
“I take advice and suggestions from my audience” is something which Coenraad Nel (Mieliepop Founder) said in our interview with him, and this edition ticks all the right boxes. The festival has partnered with some of the most formidable South African party brands such as Lets Swing It, Toy Toy and Grietfest, lending credibility to what is sure to be a great weekend.
Mieliepop is no fly-by-night and the organisers are heavily invested in creating a great experience for all attendants. Tons of ground has been removed to create levelled camping tiers, the lake outlet wall was raised and waterfalls were implemented and 18 permanent toilets and hot water showers were built for the yearly influx of revellers into Tolderia Farm in Lothair. It’s more Alice In Wonderland than District 9, with crystal clear waters, green hills, lilies and caves with a lake as the centrepiece.
All that is aesthetic though, and the most important part of a music festival is the music. The most striking element of the Mieliepop line-up is that it is all local. The organisers aren’t trying to fill up the dome, which means there is no need for any big international artists. Mieliepop is by locals, for locals and featuring only locals. The can’t miss acts for the weekend include Albert Frost, Art Snakes, BCUC, Chee, Hellcats, Haezer, Phizicist, The Moths and The Plastics. From old to new and psych to drum and bass, there is something for everyone.
“Mieliepop Music Festival is back! We’re offering a 3 day camping experience with 50+ live acts on 3 stages at a 1 of a kind venue with food stalls, hot showers & lots of additional outdoor activities.”
