The Zentrum of the Disco-verse
Champion curators Broaden A New Sound are back at it again. Their regular exaltations of disco take place through the vehicle that is Disco De Moda and this year their journey has already seen the return master craftsman Matias Aguayo for a second helping of the energy that is within South Africa. Their journey continues on a path less travelled with Jacques Renault playing passenger for the next leg of the journey through the groove of disco.
Jacques Renault’s relationship with music started with classical playing the violin and viola. Eventually the rebellious intrigue of Washington DC’s punk scene appealed to him. The violin was replaced with electronic guitar, bass guitar and a drum set as Renault joined a bunch of bands which achieved varying degrees of success. Renault eventually delved into the art of DJing as it was something he could do on his own. He cut his teeth with a DJ residency at Smart Bar with his talent in music sourcing and curation enriched by a stint as a buyer at the legendary Gramaphone Records.
The past decade has seen Renault profile rise as he bore witness to the pinnacle of New York house and disco. His name became synonymous with US dance music mostly through his Let’s Play House label and parties, a packed touring schedule and a series of solo releases, edits and remixes with the most popular of which being his remix of Midnight Magic’s “Beam Me Up”. Late last year, over a decade into his career, Renault released his eclectic debut Zentrum on his Let’s Play House imprint. In the same way his journey through music has been multi-textured, Zentrum see’s Renault playing curator as he brings together a flurry of collaborators to delve into the multiple strands of disco and house.
This Friday, Disco De Moda will be hosting Jacques Renault at their spiritual home in Braamfontein, Kitcheners. With a 3 and a half hour set, Jacques Renault is set to give a biography of his journey through the groove with a carefully curated set including his releases and everything from italo-disco to classic house. He will be joined by Chris Keys, Andrew The DJ and Disco De Moda resident Data Takashi.
