Sipho The Gift releases blesser anti-anthem, “Asanda”

Ready for radio

Sipho The Gift released his debut album Coming Of Age late last year. One of the tracks from the album, “Phanda More” was featured at number nine on the Fuss List and we think the debut is arguably the most underrated South African hip-hop album (at least commercially) to be released in a long time.

“Asanda” is Sipho The Gift’s first release since Coming of Age. With it’s trap-influenced beat and auto-tuned vocals, the single is a departure from what we’ve come to expect from Sipho The Gift. The track sees Sipho The Gift  scrutinize and condemn Asanda’s decision to leave her current boyfriend to be with a blesser.

With blessers and the 90-percent-local mandate still on the tip of most South Africans tongues, the release seems a perfectly executed exercise in publicity. I can imagine a blessee paradoxically turning up to “Asanda” in the club, making the track a perfect choice for commercial radio to playlist. I’m hoping the exposure will lead new fans to his debut release Coming Of Age and allow them to get familiar with his true capabilities.
