The Lost Souls, looking for their soul

Unscene | Unmeasured | Untamed

There’s a pattern emerging in Cape Town, where bands are swiftly moving shape into accords reminiscent of generations before, rather than experimenting with evolving sound-metrics, and that’s why we’re getting all these psychedelic garage souls of the sixties.

There’s a new breed of hipster: the psych garage one, who pride themselves on using the most hip instruments, such as the case of The Lost Souls: Vox guitar amplifiers and a Hofner Bass (all made popular by The Beatles), as well as a 1969 Yamaha YC-10 organ.

Their outtakes are minimal, but add enough significance to look forward to their next material. Listenable, and great to play in the background, however The Lost Souls feel like they haven’t found their soul yet. If you tripping on LSD, you can sway to it, and yeah, that’d be nice, but I’m unsure whether their outlined identity have hit the nail on the head in their first track. Leaving the last remnants of the Gumbo Ya-Yas, where the party died out, along with the voice, and moving onto a pace that fits comfortably by the sea, their time has come to give into what they could be: unmeasured, unparalleled and untamed.

According to the band, The Lost Souls aim to breathe new soul into what was lost in rock and roll over the years, and take it back to the primitive freakbeat of the original outcasts. Okay boys, you have my attention, let’s see what you do next.
